The Philosophy of the Department of Science Education is couched within the realm of the philosophy of Teacher Education as encapsulated in the National Policy of Education. The philosophy of the programme is to provide for individuals advanced education and research skills in the teaching and learning of science and mathematics. It is hinged on an interdisciplinary (e.g. cognitive science and philosophy) programme, which strikes a balance between theoretical and practical aspects of science and mathematics teaching and learning, and scienceand mathematics curriculum development. It is also designed to facilitate in-depth theoretical coursework, classroom-based research, and curriculum development studies in the areas of science and mathematics education, it is also intended to promote critical and analytical thinking.
