Professor Ganiyu Bello is a seasoned educator and researcher in the Department of Science Education at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. His area of specialization is Biology Education, with a strong focus on constructivist pedagogy. Driven by a deep passion for empowering learners, he is committed to creating learning environments where students take an active role in building their own understanding of biological concepts. His teaching and research are grounded in the constructivist theory of learning, which emphasizes active student participation in the learning process.
His primary research interest lies in biology instruction, particularly in investigating the misconceptions and alternative conceptions held by both teachers and students. Through his studies, he aims to develop and promote effective teaching strategies that improve conceptual clarity and foster a deeper understanding of biological concepts. Professor Bello is also dedicated to exploring the use of Information and Communication Technology in biology education. Professor Bello’s career in education has included a wide range of responsibilities. He began as an auxiliary teacher in primary school, later served as a principal in secondary school, and rose to the position of Chief Lecturer at the Kwara State College of Education in Ilorin. He has earned national recognition for his expertise, serving as an External Examiner and contributing to the promotion and assessment of academic staff in higher institutions across Nigeria. He has also participated in several accreditation exercises conducted by the National Commission for Colleges of Education, helping to uphold and improve educational standards in teacher training institutions.
As a dedicated scholar, Professor Bello has published over 60 articles in respected academic journals both within Nigeria and internationally. He has also co-authored 19 textbooks and book chapters. His editorial contributions include serving on the boards of various peer-reviewed journals. He is highly committed to mentorship and has guided many graduate students and young educators, many of whom have gone on to hold leadership positions in education across the country.
He is a proud member of several professional organizations, including the Science Association of Nigeria, the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, and the Collaboration of Education Faculties in West Africa. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria. Within the University of Ilorin, Professor Bello has served as the Acting Director of the Centre for Students with Special Needs and as the Acting Head of the Department of Science Education.
Outside the academic community, he has shown strong leadership and service through his involvement in extracurricular and community-based initiatives. He previously served as Chairman of the Kwara State Chess Association and continues to contribute as a patron.
